8.3 Control of Non Conforming Product

Your must ensure that products / service / processes not conforming to requirements / plans are suitably identified (where applicable) and controlled to prevent mis-use. Controls and responsibilities must be defined within a documented procedure. There are a number of ways you could deal with these issues (forget the term non conforming product unless you actually manufacture something):

  • take action to eliminate the issue
  • authorise its use by way of a concession by relevant authority and where applicable the customer.
  • taking action to preclude its original intended use.
  • Records of such problems and subsequent actions shall be maintained.

    This is the old badly worded 4.13 Non Conforming Product of the 1994 standard. It really does still include problems with suppliers, customers and internal problems to do with the quality system.
