How to implement ISO9000:2000 from either scratch or upgrade from an old 1994 quality management system

Implications - ISO9000:2000, what are the changes?

ISO9000:2000 operates from November 2000 for new assessments. ISO9000:2000 transition - Certification bodies will then grant companies up to a maximum of 3 years transition for companies with existing 1994 registration. ISO9000:2000 - more like 2003 then! Cool, I can leave it for while? Actually no, this does not mean you can hide your head in the sand, the reason your certification body have given you three years is that for a company taking its systems seriously, thats how long it will take. If you are serious about quality and growing your business, then your application toward this new standard should start right here and not have to wait for an imposition by your certification body.

Amongst other things, you will require:

  1. A restructured, reworded quality manual
  2. Changes to procedures
  3. Contract Review must include regulatory and legal requirements and assessment of the customers intended use of the product. It must also cover planned delivery and support where applicable.

The new standard also requires that you cover all customer contact to obtain feedback (see below) which might include market research, brochures, new product information, price lists, catalogues, EDI, Internet and web sites, exhibitions, user groups, meetings and reviews and customer marking or assessments of your service.

Purchasing needs to show any special requirements you may have on the Purchase Order which will then be subject to inspection. It also needs to cover inspection of goods delivered direct to a customer from a supplier.

Where reviews are held with key suppliers, these must be recorded and actions agreed and carried out.

Audits must be against the standard as well as the procedures, this may raise a need for internal auditor training which Activa can provide by qualified Lead Auditors.

Design must now be included if it applies to you. You cannot opt out any more and will be assessed to the degree it is done but it must be in line with the main standard sections for design. Where design changes occur you must assess any implications to other customers or products and how to handle or advise them.

Quality Planning must be documented both overall in terms of how you plan your product / service delivery, how you manage changes to any introduced or existing processes, including training, and any planning that may be required to be carried out for individual contracts.

Management review is changed greatly.
